In this tutorial, I'll demonstrate how to make felt food eggs. Eggs are simple to make so this is a good project for beginners. This project is relatively inexpensive. You can pick up acrylic felt sheets at craft stores for about 25 cents each.
Supply List:
1 sheet white felt - available from local craft stores
1 sheet or scraps of dark yellow felt
White embroidery floss and/or thread
Yellow embroidery floss and/or thread
Small amount of polyfill stuffing
Scissors
Needle
Sewing machine (optional)
Note: You can hand-sew these eggs if you do not have a sewing machine. You can also use either wool felt or acrylic felt. Wool felt is more expensive, but lasts longer. Acrylic felt is cheaper and easier to find.
Step-by-Step Instructions: How to Make Your Own Felt Food Eggs
Yield: These instructions will make 1 felt food egg.
1. Cut 2 white egg shapes out of the white felt. If you cannot draw a pattern free hand, then you can try one of my favorite techniques. Cook an egg and use it for your inspiration. Your egg shape should not be perfectly round. You can even have multiple egg shapes if you want. In my example, my egg white is about 4.25 inches long by 2.5 inches wide.
2. Cut 2 round egg yolks out of the dark yellow felt. My egg yolk has about a 1.5 inch diameter. See picture 1 for the cut-out pieces.
3. Place 1 egg yolk onto the top of 1 egg white. Stitch about ¾ of the way around the egg yolk either using your sewing machine or by hand. Once you are about ¾ finished, stop sewing and add a small amount of fiberfill to plump up the yolk section. See picture 2 for an example. Finish sewing the egg yolk to the egg white.
4. Place the 2 egg white pieces, wrong-sides together. You should have the egg yolk piece facing upwards. Use white thread or embroidery floss to stitch completely around the egg white. You can use your sewing machine on this step or use embroidery floss and stitch by hand. See photo 3 for an example of hand stitching.
5. Repeat these steps for as many eggs as you want to make. See picture 4 for an example of 2 completed eggs.
If you get bold, try your hand at making additional felt food pieces to accent your child's play food collection. Have fun and let your creativity flow!
