How to Make Your Own Hanukkah Decorations

Creating your own decorations for Hanukkah can give more meaning to your decorations as opposed to just buying them from a store. Hanukkah decoration projects can be educational and something that can be done by all family members for some quality time together. The Hanukkah decorations you create can also be given as meaningful gifts to family and friends.

Menorah addition:

You can, of course, create your own Menorah but how about adding an interesting addition to the one you already have? This is a simple project and you will most likely already have what you need for it on hand.

All you need is a rectangular piece of sturdy cardboard or poster board. It should be at least slightly larger than your Menorah in height and length. Fold both of the lengthwise ends inwards to an angle of 30 degrees or more so that the piece will stand by its' self. Cover your cardboard or poster board with aluminum foil. You may use glue or tape to keep it in place.

Using a small nail or pushpin, poke holes through the foil covered piece. Create any type of pattern you wish, but a Star of David or multiple smaller stars, would make a very nice design. Place your piece behind your Menorah and once the Menorah is lit you will see a lovely reflection from it as well as a light pattern behind it.

Candle holders:

Since Hanukkah is The Festival of Lights additional candles throughout your home can add a festive and meaningful touch. Candleholders of all kinds can be decorated specially for Hanukkah. Simply painting them in shades of blue or silver will make them festive but you can also paint them with designs. Add a Star of David or dreidel shape with paint or a glitter glue to votive type candle holders you already have or buy at a store. Be sure that the paint or glue you use will withstand any heat from the candle.

Hanukkah wreath:

Christmas is not the only holiday that can be celebrated with a fragrant pine wreath.

Materials:

Moderate gauge wire to support your pine branches. Mechanics or heavy floral wire will work.

Smaller gauge floral wire for attaching your pine.

Pine or evergreen branches, cut to about six inches or so in length. The quantity will depend on the size of the wreath you wish to create.

Pine cones, painted in blue or silver

One or more bows in blue or silver, again the size will depend on the overall size of your wreath.

Decide what type of shape wreath you would like. Round is not the only choice. You might try a free form wave shape or you could even form two separate triangles and attach them together to create a Star of David shape.

Cut your pine branches to the correct size for your frame and attach them with your smaller gauge floral wire. Add pine cones and bows. You will now have a nicely scented wreath to enjoy for the holidays. Your wreath can be displayed outside or inside and can even be used as a table centerpiece as an added touch.

Simple color additions:

The colors most associated with Hanukkah are blues, white and silver. While not as much of a craft, you can use a blue or white fabric table cloth and add silver or blue cloth napkins to create a color theme. You can even fold napkins into triangles and place one on top of another, with one triangle point up and the other down, to have a Star of David shaped napkin set on each place setting. You can do the same with larger napkins or fabric pieces for the center of your table. Add a set of your decorated candle holders to complete your centerpiece.
