How to Make Your Own Haunted House

Gerri Ward
The first of October every year is when my children and I display our Halloween decorations, mostly on the inside. When the children were toddlers the decorations were mild, not scary but now that the children are teenagers the decorations have become frightening and Gorey. Hollywood has helped transform our home into a haunted house. We begin by draping black gauze over the mirrors in the living room and putting yellow crime tape across the doors to the living room. On the floor we have a large black board outlined with a life size body in chalk as a murder victim, then we splatter blood all over the board and throw trash about the crime scene. Large wide foam boards are placed over the wall by the crime scene where fake blood has splattered onto the wall spewing with guts. Fog machines are hidden in places and turned on creating an explosion of fog misting the entire downstairs. A life size dummy stands behind our front yard tree dressed as Michael Myers of Halloween peering into the window as he observes the crime he has committed .In the distance the entire CD of Halloween plays. Lights are dimmed showing only what needs to be seen to send chills down one's spine. A couple of dummies male and female can be seen strewn about the sofa covered in blood with dangling body parts. Lamps are knocked over and furniture is broken. When children come to trick or treat they are welcome to observe the crime Michael Myers has committed as he watches them from the outside.
