How to Make Your Own Natural Deep Conditioning Treatments for Hair

DIY Hair Conditioners with All Natural Ingredients

Deep conditioning treatments are quite expensive at salons and require a big chunk of time out of your schedule. At home commercial treatments are more convenient, but they can still be pricey, full of unnecessary chemicals and come in packaging that you will then have to dispose of. Although store-bought hair conditioners made from natural ingredients are better for you and the environment, they can be even more expensive than their conventional deep conditioning counterparts and still leave you with an empty (sometimes hard to recycle) container after just a few applications. Avoid scheduling appointments, slathering on chemical concoctions and tossing out boxes and bottles with one of these quick, easy, natural DIY deep conditioning treatments for your hair.

With these three super easy DIY deep conditioners for your hair you will limit the impact your personal care regimen has on the planet, save time and save a lot of money - all while getting the same (or better!) results you would receive from expensive salon treatments and specialty products.

All Natural DIY Deep Conditioning Treatments for Your Hair

  1. DIY natural hot oil treatmentfor hair - You don't need to purchase commercial hot oil treatments to experience the benefits of luxuriously soft hair. Everything you need is probably already in your pantry. For a great at-home hot oil treatment simply place a bowl of olive oil (or canola, soybean or other light cooking oil) in a larger bowl or saucepan of warm water and allow the oil to heat up to your desired temperature. Work the oil through your hair and put on a reusable shower cap while you catch up on household chores, then just jump in the shower and shampoo as usual. You will get all of the benefits of a commercial hot oil treatment without the chemicals, expense or wasteful packaging.
  2. Natural, deep conditioning coconut oil treatment for hair - Another healthy, natural, single ingredient hair conditioning option is to simply purchase all natural coconut oil, work it into your hair, throw on a reusable shower cap and allow the coconut oil to condition your hair for 15-20 minutes. Then, rinse and allow to dry naturally for soft, luxurious, shiny hair. Coconut oil can be found at most natural or health food stores. Coconut oil might seem a bit pricey, but it is much less expensive than a salon deep conditioning treatment and you will get several applications out of a single container.
  3. DIY natural deep conditioning avocado treatment for hair -For another great deep conditioning treatment that can be whipped up in a couple of minutes, take ½ of an avocado and mash it up, then mix in coconut milk (1/4 to ½ cup) to make a semi-thick mixture. Work the avocado/coconut milk deep conditioner into your hair, comb through, throw on a reusable shower cap and allow it to deep condition your hair for about 15-20 minutes before rinsing. Avocado also works well by itself as a deep conditioning treatment.

Pre-Conditioning Natural DIY Clarifying Treatment for Your Hair

Before you deep condition your hair with one of the above all-natural deep conditioning treatments, you might want to do a quick natural clarifying rinse to remove build up from shampoo, conditioner, hairspray and whatever else you have been putting on your hair. After shampooing (hopefully with an all natural or homemade shampoo) apply an apple cider vinegar rinse to your hair that is about half apple cider vinegar and half water. The measurements don't have to be exact and the amount will depend on the length and thickness of your hair. Leave the rinse on your hair for 1-2 minutes then rinse. This is not an absolutely necessary step before each conditioning treatment, but I always do this simple, DIY clarifying rinse before I deep condition and I think it really does make a difference.

Great post, very informative. I've been using Pro Naturals Moroccan Argan Oil System to tackle breakages, dryness and split ends and so far it has worked really well to protect and repair my hair. I recommend it!

What if you use room temperature olive oil?

I tried mixing olive oil in my conditioner then left it on for 15 min. WOW. That worked really well!

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) isn't used for clarifying... it's used to restore the pH to your hair after you are done with shampoo & conditioner. It doesn't clarify and it doesn't chelate. Don't use more than 1-2 Tblsp per cup of water - anything higher and the low pH of the ACV can damage the hair. ACV is safe enough (at this ratio) to be used every day/every wash.

A good natural clarifier is baking soda. Mix some into your shampoo (for best results use a natural shampoo) or you can apply it mixed with water to form a paste. It is hard to rinse out sometimes, which is why I recommend mixing with shampoo. But it's VERY drying, so be sure to deep condition right after.

All clarifying products are drying, because they strip your hair of everything. Use only when your hair really needs it.

I love the fact that these are natural and eco-friendly. Plus, they're easy to make and inexpensive. Excellent job.

My hair is so dry I might try some of these soon because this stuff IS expensive, and I don't like buying products tested on animals, and the organic and cruelty-free products tend to be a bit more expensive, so this is a good way to also save money.
