How to Make Your Own Prima Flowers

If you have a passion for scrapbooking, you already know how expensive supplies, including accessories like prima flowers, can be. The benefits to making your own primas are not limited to the monetary savings. You can also customize the colors to match your page or create them in the exact size you desire.

Purchase a small amount of synthetic taffeta or organza fabric, or locate these synthetics by hunting through scraps from previous projects.

Cut a flower shape from your fabric that measures 2 inches in diameter or as large as you'd like your finished flower to be. Cut several smaller flowers out of the same fabric, making sure each flower is slightly smaller than the previous one. Layer the flowers on top of each other, with the largest on the bottom and the smallest on the top, to make sure the sizes are to your liking, and make any trimming adjustments if necessary.

Light a candle. Take one of the layers of the flower and move it gradually toward the flame until its edges begin to melt and singe. Singe all the edges of the flower, then repeat with the other layers.

Arrange the layers on top of one another as you did before. Cut a circle of chipboard about the size of the smallest flower to be your base. Place a dot of tacky glue at the center of the chipboard circle, then center the largest flower layer above it and press down to secure. Glue the remaining layers at their centers in the proper order to secure the arrangement.

Squeeze a small amount of glue onto the back of a button. Press the button down into the center of the smallest flower layer. Let dry. Repeat to make many flowers.
