How To Make A Canopy Using Curtain Rods
Materials
2 long round curtain rods
2 short round curtain rods
Tape measure
pencil (for marking)
screw driver
pliers
curtain panels
Note: this canopy will be mounted to the ceiling so make sure your bed is in a location where you plan to keep it.
First, measure each long side of your bed. Note these measurements as you will need to purchase 2 rods this length. Next, measure the head and foot of the bed to get your width. Note the measurement as you will need to purchase 2 rods this length. I recommend using the round cafe style rods, these make it easier to slide the curtains open and closed, plus they look nicer. Measure the ceiling above the bed and place a mark on all four corners, this is where you will be attaching the curtain rod hardware. You will have purchased 2 long rods and 2 shorter rods, so there for you should have eight sets of hardware. You will be attaching 2 sets of hardware on each corner in opposite directions and within close proximity to each other. You want to make sure that they are close enough so there are no gaps. You want the rods to line up so when the curtains are on, it looks like one continuing rod, without spaces between the curtains. Once you have the hardware in place add your curtain panels to the rod before you hang them. After you have them hung you will want to take a pair of pliers and slightly turn the hardware posts inward (towards the rod). This will keep the rods from sliding off of the hardware and make it easier to slide the curtains without fear of the rods coming off.
Curtain Length
Measure from the rod down within 1" of the floor, to determine the length of curtains you will require. If you have a hard time finding curtains in the length you need, opt to hang them a few inches shorter or buy longer curtains. You can let them hang beyond the floor for extra drama or shorten them to your desired length.
Canopy Curtain Options
Soft and Flowing
Sheers are the best option if you want a soft billowing effect. Also sheers are fairly inexpensive and come in a wide variety of colors. It will take approx. 12 sheer panels. 4 Panels for each of the longer sides and 2 for the foot and 2 for the head of the bed.
Elegant
To add a touch of elegance use 8 drapery panels of your choice, these are usually solid and a heavier weight. Put one on each end of the long rods and one on each end of the short rods. These will remain stationary and are not intended to be open and closed. This option also works great if a man sleeps there too. Even men don't mind jewel tones or earth tones. Navy blue, Burgundy, Gold, Hunter green, brown, beige etc.
Ultra Feminine
Light weight cotton panels with a floral print, especially roses will add a very feminine touch.
Young Girls Room
Try using 2 different colors together and balance the colors from side to side. Mix and match them. For the girly girl pastels work great. For the lively girl use bright cheerful colors.
Once you have the rods up the rest is up to you. Try different looks. The possibilities are endless. I hope you found 'How To Make Your Own Canopy Bed' helpful and are ready for the room of your dreams.
