How to Make Your Own 'Say Anything' and 'Weird Science' Costumes

There is no denying the popularity of the 1980s when it comes to choosing theme parties or costumes. Remembering the movies of that decade brings a sense of nostalgia for many people. Other people enjoy 80s movies for the fashion, the phrases, and the music. If you are thinking of dressing up as one of your favorite movie characters from the 80s, here are some ideas from which to draw inspiration from "Say Anything" and "Weird Science".

John Cusack as Lloyd Dobler, "Say Anything"

In this 1989 film, low-achieving teen Lloyd Dobler attempts to begin a romantic relationship with a very smart classmate named Diane who just happens to be leaving for England soon. Probably the most iconic scene in the film involves Lloyd standing outside Diane's house holding a boom box over his head playing Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes." People wanting to recreate Lloyd's character for Halloween or another costume party can easily assemble his outfit. You'll need to wear slouchy grey or faded black pants rolled up at the ankles, white high top sneakers, a white t-shirt with red lettering, and an oversized tan trench coat. Essential to the costume is the eighties style boom box, preferably with a cassette of the Peter Gabriel song.

Gary and Wyatt, "Weird Science"

This hilarious film is about two nerds who use a computer to create the perfect woman and the hijinks that follow. Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith play Gary and Wyatt, and the scene where the boys wear the "ceremonial" bras on their heads would be perfect and easy costume to put together. Each guy will need a plain white matronly bra to wear clasped under their chins and around their heads. Gary could wear a large lilac t-shirt rolled up at the sleeves, dark cotton pants, and black tennis shoes (such as Converse). Wyatt could wear an 80s styled gray jacket (undershirt optional), dark pants, and tennis shoes. For added effect you could also carry a prop of a female Barbie doll hooked up to a cardboard computer.
