How To: Make Your Own Soap Crayons

Home Made Crayons

Bath time at our house is a time to clean up and wind down, but we also like to allow the kids to have a little fun in the tub, splashing, playing with boats and other tub toys in the process. I recently learned how to make my own soap crayons and my kids could play in the tub with them for hours, they are so much fun and the "artwork" wipes away easily.

Making your own soap crayons is extremely inexpensive and easy. Just follow these simple directions and gear up for the fun!

You'll need the simple, common household ingredients, you may even have all of them on hand already; soap flakes (I use Dreft, but you could also use Ivory or the like), liquid food coloring and hot water. You'll also need a large bowl, a spatula, three or four smaller bowls (depending on how many colors you would like to make), a bunch of spoons and an ice cube tray or candy mold. I like to buy fun candy mold in shapes of cars and animals for my boys, but regular ice cube trays work just fine.

In the large bowl, mix together one cup of the soap flakes and about two tablespoons of hot water, stirring constantly until the mixture is extremely thick and difficult to stir. Spoon the soap mixture into the smaller bowls for coloring, and then mix in enough liquid food coloring in each bowl (in the color/color combinations you choose) to reach the consistency of very thick glue. Once you have created all of your colors, you can then begin to fill the molds until they are full.

Store the molds in a cool, dry place until your soap crayons harden. This process takes a few days, sometimes up to a week depending on the temperature in your area at the time. Once set and firm, transfer to a wax paper lined cookie sheet to harden again for a couple more days. Now you're ready to color in your bathtub!

To remove the crayon from your bathtub and/or shower walls, simply wipe clean with a damp towel. If this doesn't do the trick, simply use your normal bathroom cleaner. If you're concerned about the crayons staining your tub/tile surfaces test in an inconspicuous spot (or make them without dye) before letting your little artists loose!

Some fun games to play with the tub crayons are tic-tac-toe and counting games. You can draw a race track and race matchbox cars along it, or you can draw an ocean scene complete with fish, or a lake with ducks! The opportunities for fun are endless!
