How to Make Your Own Stained Glass Windows

Ainsley Patterson
As a child I used to love sitting in St. Mary's church staring at the stained glass windows depicting scenes from the Bible. Then, one year for my Christmas I got a craft kit that had little clear plastic ornaments with designs outlined in black on them that allowed me to color them in and hang them from my bedroom window to get a stained glass effect. If you love the look of stained glass windows as much as I do, then you would probably like to know how to make your own stained glass windows, and the easier the project the better, right? Well, you're are in luck! Below are directions on how to make your own stained glass windows without having to cut any glass.

How to Make Your Own Stained Glass Windows: Step 1

Make sure that you thoroughly clean the panel of glass that you will be working on, especially the side that you plan on painting.

Note: If you feel that the framing of your panel of glass needs to be sanded and/or painted then you will want to do that before you do any work with the glass itself.

How to Make Your Own Stained Glass Windows: Step 2

The very next step that you will need to take is to make sure that your design is the right size to fit on your glass panel. Once your design is the right size you can attach the design to the side of your glass panel that you will not be painting on, with the design showing through the glass.

How to Make Your Own Stained Glass Windows: Step 3

Once you have attached your design to your glass securely you can begin to trace your design onto the glass with the liquid leading. If you are a beginner then a more basic design is probably best. Take your time in tracing the design, it is always better to take longer to do a project and get it right, than to rush through it and end up less than pleased with your project.

How to Make Your Own Stained Glass Windows: Step 4

Wait for the leading to completely dry before you begin to fill in your design with the stained glass paint. If you find that a color is coming out too light, then wait until the first coat of paint dries completely, then add another coat to make the color darker.

Note: To make sure that you are happy with your choice of color you make want to color in your design on paper first, before painting the colors onto your glass.

Once all the paint dries and you are happy with the colors you are finished and you can sit back and enjoy your very own stained glass window! What's even better is the fact that now you know how to make your own stained glass windows so you can fill your whole home will windows that feature lovely designs if you do choose.
