Making your own toys is a great way to really add a personal touch to toys for your kids or friends or even for yourself, own toys is a great way to really add a personal touch to toys for your kids or friends or even for yourself, and if you get really good at it, you could even make a little (or a lot!) of money selling them!

You will need:

Scissors

Needle and thread

12" x 5" black fur (for feet)

24" x 14" white fur (for body)

2 medium sized eyes

Black nose (heart shaped)

Stuffing

Step 1: Make the pattern (using the diagram shown as a guide) and draw around it on the wrong side of the fabric. Cut out all the pieces.

Step 2: Fold the ears in half with right sides together, pin together and stitch, turn the right way out. Repeat for the other ear and the tail.

Step 3: Pin and stitch the feet to the bottom of the legs.

Step 4: Making sure the right sides are facing you, pin the ears and tail to the body. Match both sides of the underbody, right sides together, pin and stitch together leaving a small gap in the middle.

Step 5: Place the head gusset onto the body, right sides together starting at the back of the neck, pin and stitch.

Step 6: Place the second side of the body on top of the first side, right sides together, pin and stitch from the tail right the way around to underneath the head (chin). Carefully snip just under where the tail will go.

Step 7: Open up the legs and place the underbody on top with right sides together and pin the feet in place so they are secure.

Step 8: Pin and stitch around the outside of the underbody. Insert and attach the eyes. Turn the whole toy the right way out, you will need to push the head and the legs into the centre and gently bring them through the opening.

Step 9: Insert stuffing; you may need to use a stuffing tool, or even the wrong end of a knitting needle to reach the smaller places. Start with the legs, then the head and finish with the body.

Step 10: Close the body with a ladder stitch, pull tightly and secure.

I think making toys for children is a great idea. When I was young, my grandmother made me animals out of wire, cotton and buttons. I loved them.
