How to Paint an Airsoft Gun with Spray Paint

Blair Mathis
Many Airsoft guns come with clear plastic bodies, which serve two purposes: they make the toy safer (in that a cop is less likely to think it is a real gun), and it makes it look more like a toy. If you want your Airsoft gun to look like a professional competition piece, or to make it look more like a real gun and less like a toy, read on to find out how to spray paint your pistol or handgun.

Step 1

Get a small screwdriver that will fit inside the small holes on your airsoft gun; if you try to use too large of a screwdriver, you will scrap the plastic up and make it look bad. Use the screwdriver to remove all of the screws from your airsoft gun. If they are loosened but you cannot get them out of the case, use a magnet. Set them aside.

Step 2

Using a butter knife or plastic pry bar, gently pry the side of your gun apart (assuming it is co2). If the gun is spring loaded, will likely have a pin in the side, which you will need to turn, then push out. Once you do that, pull the slider back like you're cocking it, then gently pull upwards to remove it.

If you're using a blow-back gun, it is a little more complicated, and I recommend looking at the manual that came with your gun to see if it has cleaning instructions, which will likely stipulate on how to disassemble the gun.

Step 3

With all of the pieces laid out on a sheet of newspaper, hold your can of spray paint approximately 12" away from the plastics and spray them in a slow, uniform manner using sweeping motions. You don't have to worry about covering every bit of the plastic with the first sweep. Let the paint dry, then apply a second coat.

Once that side is finished, flip the gun and repeat on the other side. Be sure to cover the small edges.

Step 4

Reassemble the gun. In the event that you got a component stuck with paint, run a razor over it to break the seal.
