It is all about preparation not just slapping a coat of paint on and hoping; the surface must be prepared properly to ensure its durability. Without correctly preparing the surface the changes in the weather conditions will exploit any weaknesses in the siding and if left, the cost of an extensive repair will be quite costly.
Before embarking on a project to paint aluminum siding on your house it is essential to know what materials will be required. It is crucial to invest in good quality materials and even though they will be more costly, quality products come with a guarantee and if anything does go wrong the manufacturer can be consulted. Firstly, a good primer and latex top coat are necessary; it is advisable to use good sized brushes as you will be covering a large area. Steel wool and flexible caulk with a caulking gun to fill any gaps or holes that are in the siding. For any large holes or dents it is advisable to use a two part car body filler. Rags and a detergent would be needed to ensure all the surfaces are properly cleaned.
When all surfaces are smooth, then they must be washed with detergent and water. This must be left to dry before attempting to begin painting; a final check to ensure there are no small gaps or holes and you are ready to go. It must be stressed that to know how to paint aluminum siding is to know how to prepare, anybody can paint over a rough surface but paint is a lot harder to take off than apply. If the weather starts to eat away at your siding then it will probably be because the surfaces were not prepared properly.
