Before attempting to paint your asphalt roof, make sure that the roof is in good repair. Remove and replace any damaged shingles, and then glue down any shingles that may move or appear damaged. Wait at least one week before painting the roof if you have to use construction adhesive to allow it the proper amount of time to cure.
Step 1: Wash the roof thoroughly using a scrub brush and garden hose, or a power washer with a low pressure fitting. Wait for the roof to dry before continuing, which could take as long as 24 hours in some climates.
Step 2: Apply a coat of acrylic latex primer to the surface of the roof with a paint roller. Apply primer to any areas that a long napped roller cannot reach with a paintbrush.
TIP: Applying a good coat of primer is essential for preventing the roof from peeling as it is exposed to different elements. Skip the primer, and you'll undoubtedly have to remove the paint and repaint after a few seasons. By using an acrylic system, you should not have to worry about the local laws that restrict the use of oil paint.
Step 3: Allow the primer to dry for at least 6 hours.
TIP: Choose a calm day where wind will be less likely to blow debris, leaves, and dirt into the paint.
Step 4: Apply a coat of acrylic paint over the primer. Allow the paint to dry for at least six hours, then apply a second coat.
TIP: You may also want to paint the gutters and downspouts to match the color of your new roof.
