How to Paint Bubbles in a Child's Room

A Guide to Decorating an Underwater Themed Room.

When decorating their child's room, many parents want to come up with a unique theme. Kids might want their room decorated with their favorite cartoon character, or perhaps an interest of theirs. With all of these themes, it is the small details that really make the room special. If your child chooses a Spongebob or an underwater themed room, painting bubbles will really make it interesting. Here are some simple tips for painting bubbles on a wall.

First, you will need several sizes of circles that you can trace around. A dime, 2 liter bottlecap, and a nickel are good sizes, but you can use anything round. If you want to make very large bubbles, you could even use saucers and mugs to trace around. You will need two kinds of paint. If you want to add functionality and a cool effect to the bubbles, you will need glow-in-the-dark paint. If you do not want to use them to glow-in-the-dark, you will need iridescent paint. This will give the bubble a shimmer to make it look more realistic. For the second type of paint, you should use a silver metallic paint. This has a nice effect on the wall and gives the bubble some added shimmer. The other supplies you will need are a paint brush, some newspaper or paper towels, and a pencil.

First, hold up the circles to wall so that you can trace around them. The larger sized ones should go on the bottom, and the smaller ones on top. To make it the most realistic, stagger the circles randomly in a column. Do not paint too many columns next to each other, because this effect works best when it is used sparingly. Make the columns different sizes. This can be done by adding or subtracting circles from the column. For one, paint three of each size, and for another, paint four of each. The idea is to keep everything very random.

Trace around the circles with your pencil, until you have an entire column. Dip your paintbrush in the silver paint, remove the excess on the paper towel or newspaper, and then paint around the circles you traced. Finish outlining the entire column of bubbles in silver paint. Let this dry completely.

Once you've finished outlining all of the bubbles, you can paint the inside. Whether you use the iridescent paint or the glow-in-the-dark paint, you will need more than one coat. This is especially true for the glow-in-the-dark paint, and you may find yourself putting many coats. Fill in the inside of the bubbles, and let it dry.

There is one final step that will give it a very realistic effect. Make sure that you paint a small, curved rectangle with silver paint in an upper corner of the bubble. The most realistic way is to find the corner of the bubble that is closest to the light source, and paint the rectangle there. That way, it looks like the light is catching the bubble and making it shimmer. This means that the rectangle may change location within the bubbles as you move throughout the room, but the perspective really helps the effect.

When your kids beg for a undersea or Spongebob room, this will help make it extra special, and look like you really spent some extra time coming up with a great custom design. This is one room that is certain to have all of your child's friends telling their parents about it, and their parents will be amazed at your artistic and creative abilities. Fortunately, they don't have to know how easy the design was to accomplish.
