How to Paint a Kitchen Back Splash with Chalkboard Paint

Painting your kitchen back splash with chalkboard paint is one of the least expensive finishing option for that space. Unlike other paints, chalkboard paint will withstand some of the kitchen mess. Also, it can become a convenient way for adding lists and family notes and drawing to your space.

You can also use this method to add chalkboard paint to the inside of pantry doors or other areas where chalkboard paint might be a good enhancement.

Step 1: Install a new material for the back splash with screws. Backerboard that is 3/8 of an inch is a good choice, but heavy sheet metal is also a good idea if you want to incorporate magnets to hang things on the back splash

TIP: You can also purchase magnetic chalkboard paint if you wish to use magnets, but an actual sheet of metal will provide a stronger pull to the magnets. No matter what you choose, however, not painting the actual back splash ensures that it will be easy to remove later.

Step 2: Fill any seams and screw heads with putty and sand away any imperfection. Wipe the area with a tack cloth.

Step 3: Apply a primer made for use with chalkboard paint. If you installed metal sheeting, you should use a primer that would easily cover it. Allow the primer to dry thoroughly before continuing.

Step 4: Apply a second coat of primer and allow it to dry completely.

Step 5: Apply a coat of chalkboard paint. Although you can get custom colors mixed, traditional black paint will add to the bistro feeling of the chalkboards. Let the paint dry.

Step 6: Add another coat of chalkboard paint. Plan on adding at least three coats over the primer for best results. Allow the paint to cure for three days before using chalk on it.

Step 7: Apply a thin layer of chalk to the entire kitchen back splash using the side of a piece of chalk. Then wash the chalk away with a damp sponge. This will help prevent individual chalk messages from becoming embedded in the board. How to Remove the Trim from Around a Door
