How to Paint Kitchen Backsplash Designs with Stencils

The kitchen backsplash can quickly become the focal point of your cooking arena and you can hand paint kitchen backsplash designs over the stove top or faucet to create a signature look. If you're not artistically inclined, you can use a stencil to create an attractive pattern in a contrasting color as the kitchen wall. Here's a step by step guide to painting a kitchen backsplash design using any stencil of your choice:

Step 1: Apply primer to the wall. Whether you're painting a plain wall or tiles for your kitchen backsplash, you'll need to apply a surface primer as the base of your painting project. Your best choice for kitchen backsplash designs is a glossy primer. Use a roller brush to apply one coat to the surface and allow it to dry completely.

Step 2: Paint the area with your choice of wall paint. Choose wall paint suitable for kitchens to reduce the risk of peeling and staining from the heat of the stove top or moisture from the faucet in the backsplash area. You may need to apply several coats before it's ready for the stenciled design. Read the paint's application instructions thoroughly to make sure you are aware of drying times and the number of coats you need to apply to achieve the right shade.

Step 3: Apply your stencil design. Whether you've selected a flower motif, a creative emblem or another stencil design, the next step is to apply your stencil using a roller brush on each area. If you have chosen a very small stencil (one that's smaller than your palm), you can fill in the lines using a regular artist brush. You will need to stencil the kitchen backsplash design in a complementary color to the wall you have painted. Remove the stencil and leave the design to dry.

Step 4: Clean up the stenciled design. You may notice slight cracks or an uneven edge on your design after the stenciled design has dried. Take a small artist brush and fill in any spaces, gaps and unevenness so that the edges of the design are picture-perfect. Leave to dry.

Step 5: Add a coat of polyurethane as a sealant. You can now seal in your kitchen backsplash design with a polyurethane treatment. This will reduce the risk of dripping and staining even further, and leave your kitchen backsplash design with a glossy, professional finish. Apply this with a foam roller brush and let it dry completely.

Your kitchen backsplash design is now ready and you will be able to cook or prepare foods and other items around it. Remember, you can't add any more touch ups or modify the design after the polyurethane has been applied, so make sure you've made all modifications before proceeding to Step 5.
