How to Paint Porcelain

Lauren Vork
Things you'll need:

Glass paint

Dish doap

Paper towel

Permanent markers

Nail polish remover

Cotton balls

Grease makeup pencil

Detail brushes

Tracing paper

Pencil

Craft knife

Wash and dry the porcelain; this will prevent any dust or grit from getting beneath the paint and interfering with its texture or adhesion.

Dampen a small piece of paper towel in a solution of one part dish soap, two parts water.

Sketch the design you want on the porcelain using the permanent markers.

Outline the marker design using the makeup pencil. Correct any mistakes you make in your drawing. Use the pencil to make an outline of the lines you want in your image.

Soak a cotton ball in nail polish remover.

Dab the cotton ball over the design with a blotting motion. This will remove the permanent marker while leaving the grease pencil lines in tact. Let the nail polish remover dry for 10 minutes before proceeding.

Fill in the grease pencil outline with paint using the detail brush. Let dry.

Remove the makeup pencil using the dishwashing soap.

Wrap a small piece of tracing paper around the dish over the drawing. Trace the shape of the design in pencil.

Use the craft knife to cut out the shapes in the design, creating a stencil.

Trace the image from the tracing paper stencil onto the additional pieces of porcelain. Trace the image through the stencil in permanent marker.

Repeat steps 4-11 for each piece of pottery.

Tip: Though you can use this process to paint porcelain in any design and color, use navy paint and intricate images covering the entire vessel if you want to create a quintessential Chinese design.
