Step 1: Clean the fence with a garden hose fitted with a spray nozzle. If there is a lot of built up dirt, you can use a scrub brush as well to remove any caked on debris. Let the vinyl fence dry completely before continuing.
Step 2: Purchase an epoxy based exterior paint suitable for use on vinyl. It is very important to use an epoxy based paint to ensure that the paint will stick to the vinyl without flaking. When shopping for paint, you may find epoxy based paint and primer systems. This is also a good choice for painting vinyl fencing; just make sure that it is suitable for exterior use.
Step 3: Apply an epoxy based paint to the surface of the vinyl fencing using a brush. Use long strokes and keep a wet edge to ensure that there are minimal brush strokes. Let the fence dry.
TIP: A paint sprayer is also an excellent option for this project. The potential for brush strokes will have been eliminated, but the clean up involved will be far greater. You will also use more paint to cover the same area. Use drop cloths to protect against over spray if you do decide to use a paint sprayer.
Step 4: Clean your painting materials while waiting for the fence to dry. It is important to start clean up immediately after you are finished using your tools to avoid having the paint permanently dry on them.
Step 5: Apply a second coat of the epoxy based paint to the vinyl fence. Let the fence dry once again.
Step 6: Seal the epoxy paint with an epoxy based clear sealant. This will further protect the paint from fading and chipping.
