How to Paint Vinyl Shutters

Amy Whittle
Homeowners install vinyl shutters to avoid painting, but if you want to change the color scheme of your home, painting the shutters is a cost effective solution. Be aware, however, that you'll have to change your prep routine: the non-porous vinyl surface will need special preparation for it to accept exterior paint without peeling.

Step 1: Take down the vinyl shutters using an electric drill with a screwdriver attachment. Label each shutter with it's appropriate location for easy re-installation.

TIP: If you have to use a ladder, it's useful to have someone on the ground who can hold unto the shutters when you climb down the ladder.

Step 2: Clean any dirt and debris from the vinyl shutters using a garden hose with a spray attachment. Let the shutters dry completely before continuing.

Step 3: Scuff sand the surface of the vinyl shutters with a fine grit sandpaper. This will help break up the smooth surface of the vinyl, making the paint adhere better.

Step 4: Apply a coat of alkyd-base primer to the vinyl shutters using a paint sprayer. Be careful not to over apply the primer, which can cause drips. Aim for two very thin coats if necessary to make sure that the coverage is even, but without drips. Allow the vinyl shutters to dry completely.

TIP: Be sure to paint all sides with the primer, allowing each side of the vinyl shutter to dry slightly before rotating to paint the other side. Using several saw horses to support the shutters while painting will also ensure that you do a professional job.

Step 5: Apply a coat of acrylic or oil based paint over the primer using a paint sprayer. Let the coat of paint dry completely, then apply a second coat.

TIP: Local codes may prohibit oil based paint due to environmental concerns. If this is the case, you should use a high quality exterior acrylic paint.

Step 6: Reattach the vinyl shutters to the hinges on either side of each window, or screw them back into place.
