How to Paint Window Frames

Painting window frames can be a little tricky. However, here are a few tips that should help you make it a little easier.

First of all the materials and tools you will need are:

  • An old paint brush or other type of brush to remove dust and debris from the window frame or a wet rag and cleaner if they are excessively dirty
  • Something to scrape any loose paint from the frame with, such as a five way or a small putty knife
  • Caulk (make certain is a kind that can be painted over...latex caulk is the best for this), a caulk gun, and a wet rag (to wipe off excess caulk)
  • Painter's tape
  • Paint brush whichever size you are comfortable with
  • Primer if the frames are raw wood and never been painted before
  • Paint
  • Drop cloth or something to sit your paint on if you are painting inside
Second is the preparation work. This includes the following:
  • Make certain the window frame is completely clean and dry
  • Scrape or remove any loose paint or paint flakes
  • Caulk all large cracks and holes with the paintable caulk making sure to wipe off any excess with a wet rag or your finger Do not caulk the window frame to brick this requires silicone caulk since it is clear
  • Tape around the window frame so that you do not get any paint on the window panes however if you do get some on the panes simply let it dry and scrape it off with a utility knife or box cutter
  • Lay down drop cloth or other protective covering and put the paint on it so you do not get paint on the floor
Third is the actual painting itself. The painting includes the following steps:
  • Begin by priming the window frame if it has never been painted before
  • Start with the outer edges of the frame then go to the inner edges of the frame and then face it out
  • Let the primer dry and then begin the painting
  • Again do all the edges of the frame and then the face work
  • More than likely if you are changing colors on the frame you will have to apply two coats...however it will last longer if you apply two coats anyway
  • Always make certain that the first coat of paint is dry before applying the second coat
Fourth step just stand back and admire your work. Actually you are looking for anything you have missed.

The preparation work is probably the most important part of the paint job. Make certain the window frames are clean and caulked before painting.
