How to Paint on Woodwork

Kayla McClure
Do you wish to tackle a painting project that involves woodwork, but don't know where to begin? I am here to guide you in this large project. You do not need to hire a painting professional. Just think of all the money you will be saving by doing all the work yourself. Before you begin the woodwork project, a list of materials is a must.

Materials:

Primer, paint, sandpaper, wood putty, hammer and nails and paint brush are all the materials needed to complete the following project. Each material has a purpose in completing the woodwork project. The woodwork size will determine how much time it will take to complete the entire project. As our example, bookcases are beautiful pieces of woodwork. Painting a bookcase is a simple project, and if I can do it, so can you with these easy to do steps.

STEP #1: REMOVE ALL HARDWARE ITEMS, from the bookcase. An empty, clean slate is your best starting point. A full bookcase cannot be painted. The removal of everything is a step that you shouldn't forget when painting.

STEP#2: WIPE CLEAN. The wiping of the woodwork removes any dirt or dust that maybe on the bookcase. A dirty bookcase cannot allow the paint to adhere to the wood. Be sure to remove all dirt or dust before painting.

STEP#3: SANDPAPER. Sanding down the wood gives the bookcase a smooth surface for painting. The sandpaper will remove all the rough spots from the wood.

STEP #4: PUTTY. Some bookcases may have nail holes. These holes need to be filled before painting. Putty seals and covers each and every hole. This technique gives an even smoother surface. A final sanding and wipe down and the woodwork is now ready to be painted.

STEP #5: PRIMER. Priming of the wood is an essential step to painting. Primer gives paint the chance to coat the bookcase with a smoother surface. With a coat of primer, you will not need to apply so many coats of your chosen color. Allow the paint to dry overnight.

STEP #6: PAINT. The woodwork project is almost finished. You can now paint your chosen color onto the bookcase. The coats of paint will not be as many due to the coat of primer that was painted on the bookcase.

STEP # 7: DRY TIME. The final coat of paint needs to dry overnight. This process gives the bookcase a chance to completely dry. Between each layer of paint, the layers should be allowed to dry.

TIPS:

A paint conditioner allows the paint to dry slower, which in the end results gives the paint a much more even appearance after drying.

Remove all hardware from any woodwork project. You cannot paint anything while hardware is still attached.

There isn't much difference between acrylic or alkyo enamel paint. You can use either paint for the woodwork projects.

Each step and tip helps to complete the painting project. Woodwork is easy to paint. The size of the project and technique applied to the woodwork will help determine how long it will take to complete. Just remember to take your time.
