Materials:
scrap fleece
cardboard
pencil
scissors
chalk
1/4" elastic
straight pins
matching thread
sewing machine
Directions:
Have the child place their hand onto the cardboard, with their fingers closed. Now draw around the child's hand to form the shape of a mitten, make sure to include a 1/4" seam allowance around the hand and 1" along the bottom edge to accommodate the wrist. Now cut out the shape of the mitten, that you drew on the cardboard. This will be your template.
Fold the fleece fabric in half, wrong side out. Place the template on top of the fleece and use the chalk to trace the template. Remove the template and following the chalk line, cut through both layers of the fleece fabric. This will give you the front and back sections for a mitten. Repeat this step for the other mitten.
Now separate the front and back pieces of fleece. Lay them down with the wrong sides up. Place a piece of elastic along the wrist section and sew a few stitches on one end of the elastic, attaching it to the edge of the mitten. Now pull the elastic tight and begin sewing it to the fleece, across the mitten at wrist level. This will gather the fleece at the wrist. Continue this step to add the elastic to the three remaining pieces.
Next, place a top and bottom section of each mitten with the wrong sides facing out. Pin the top and bottom sections together. Sew around the mitten, using a 1/4" seam allowance. To secure the seam, run a zig zag stitch around the edge of the mitten. Now fold the opening (wrist section) down a 1/4" and fold it down another 1/4", then sew along the fold. Turn the mitten right side out. Continue this step, to complete the pair of mittens.
