You can find craft supplies in your yard, your waste basket, and in your junk drawer. Palmetto leaf wall art is a simple craft that has the potential to yield a stunning affect, yet you can find most of the supplies for this project in your yard, your storage closet, and in the rubbish. The example image for this craft is very basic; however, the creative potential for this art project is immense.

Craft Supplies

Two to three palmetto leaves
Spray paint
A cardboard surface (preferably from and old box)
Hot glue gun with glue
Yarn, ribbon, or other embellishments (small grass wheat)
Tape

First, cut two to three palmetto leaves. Be careful if you are using saw-palmetto, because those have thorny edges. You need to shave the stems before you continue. Cut the points off of the leaves so that you have a spade-shaped palmetto fan. Wash the leaves immediately with a soft bristle brush or wash rag and water to remove debris, then let them dry.

Next, cut out a canvas for the background from the cardboard box. Paint the surface and the edges. You have a great opportunity to get creative with this craft by adding shades, edging, tiger stripes or whatever you want with the paint. You can add a ribbon or lace edging around the border of the canvas to frame your artwork. You can use traditional craft supplies for the embellishments, or you can forage through junk drawers, your back yard, or the recycle bin.

While your canvas dries, paint the palmetto fans. You can paint them all one color, or you can lightly spray the tips to get a dramatic effect. You might also paint just the inside of the palmetto fans for a different artistic affect. Let them dry.

Once the pieces of your art project are done drying, you can hot glue the palmetto fans to your cardboard canvas. You can add embellishments here too. You can weave lace between the palmetto fans. For example, you could paint the background black, then paint the palmetto fans white with a hint of gold. Hanging a white lace through them creates a wedding-style that can be used with photographs.

Finally, let the hot glue dry, then turn your craft project over. Use a piece of yarn as the hanger by taping both ends of the yarn to the back of the cardboard so that you can hang your art on the wall.

Other Palmetto Wall Art Ideas:

Use some thin board from an old piece of furniture that you are going to toss in the trash as the canvas.

Buy scrapbook picture frame embellishments so that you can put family photographs in your artwork.

Use a shadow box-type display for your palmetto creation.

Use painted baby's breath or other small flora to enhance the visual effect of your project.

Get your kids involved in this craft. You can pre-paint some palmetto fans and canvases, and have the kids use regular craft glue to design their own artistic pieces.
