One thing that I really enjoy about homeschooling is how creative you can be. The pancake project is really great for kindergarten, and first grade students. I have also found that if you have more than one child it is a great way to keep the younger child busy practicing their words, while you work with the older kids. Below you will find how you can create a pancake theme sight word practice center.
For this project you will need to a computer and a printer to create the pancake sight words. Start by using a simple word program to create the sight word pancakes. You can basically make a circle on the page and then put the sight word in the middle. Make the sight word letters bold so that they really stand out on the pancake. Be sure to color the pancake to make it look like a real pancake. Print out the pancakes, and then have your child cut them out. If you have a laminating machine you should laminate each of the pancakes. Laminating the pancakes will help them to last much longer. So even if you don't have a laminating machine it is really worth it to get one for purchases like these.
Once you have your pancakes printed and laminated you are ready to get started on the rest of the center. A small kitchen, whether it is new, or used will work great. You can usually find a nice small sized kitchen at a garage sale for next to nothing. Clean it up and it will make a great center. If you have an old spatula that you no longer need you can add it to the sight word practice center. You will also need a kid size food pan to go along with the kitchen. You can find these at any toy store. You will also need a small stick on note pad. You can find these at any office supply store.
In order to help your child use this center, you can write down words on the note pad in order to place your order. Your child can then go to the kitchen and match the word that you wrote with the words on the pancake. They can cook it up and bring it to you. Or you can have them practice writing the words from the pancakes onto the order sheets to create a menu to share with you. Each time they flip the pancake over they can read the word out loud. This is really a fun homeschool center that can keep younger children occupied for hours.
