How to Be a Paranormal Investigator

The Basics of Beginning Ghost Hunting

Lisa Hoskins
Becoming a paranormal investigator isn't something you learn in a classroom or from a book, although books can be very beneficial to further your understanding of the paranormal. Hopefully this guide on how to be a paranormal investigator can shed a bit of light on the darkness of the unknown. If you have never gone on a paranormal investigation your best bet is to read, read, and read some more. Get your hands on a few ghost hunting books by well-known paranormal authors like Troy Taylor, author of the "Ghost Hunter's Guidebook" and other ghost-related books. This will introduce you to the world of the paranormal and expand your knowledge of ghosts and hauntings in general. The "Ghost Hunter's Guidebook" also contains information about technology that can be utilized during investigations, methods for conducting research and investigations, and more.

Here Are a Few Other Tips for Becoming a Paranormal Investigator:

1. If you have never been in a paranormal group before, join one. Learn from those who are already paranormal investigators in the field. This is the easiest way to learn more about ghost hunting- by doing it. Do a search online for paranormal groups in your local city or town to find them.

2. Use the Internet as a research tool to find websites with articles about how to take photos while investigating, EVP (electronic voice phenomena) research, video recording and other technology-related research.

3. Join community message boards and social websites to connect with others who are in the paranormal field. TAPS (Trans-Atlantic Paranormal Society) has a great message board on their website with many topics like starting your own paranormal group, what research forms to use, how to find help, etc.

4. Never stop researching and trying to find new methods for investigations.

Once you have done a bit of research and perhaps joined a local ghost hunting group in your area, you will find that you only want to expand your awareness of the paranormal. You may want to attend paranormal conferences, lectures and other ghost hunting events so that you can network with other people and learn more about the field in general. Each experience that you encounter will help you to grow as a paranormal investigator, and perhaps someday you might even start your own group. Just be careful when trying to become a paranormal investigator. Many people charge for "ghost hunting certification", promising that you will learn everything you need to know and when you finish their class you will be certified to be a paranormal investigator. Just remember, there are no experts in this field-although there are some wonderful people you can find with many years of experience. Just be aware and remain smart with your choices, and you will do just fine.

You don't need to join a group to be an investigator. If you educate yourself, you don't have to be part of a group to investigate. I believe networking with other investigators is important to share data and find new methods, but being a part of a group is not a MUST for investigation.

Additionally, becoming part of the TAPS machine is not exactly a stellar decision. Read the fine print from TAPS before you join. You can have just as much fun without contributing to the outrageous fakery that is TAPS.
