How Parents Can Cope with Raising a Gay / Lesbian Child

Casey C
How can a parent cope with raising their gay/lesbian child? First thing is to accept them for who they are. The child did not choose to be this way and will have enough problems dealing with his or her sexuality. Many people believe it is a choice to be homosexual, although, this is not a choice. Do heterosexuals choose to be heterosexual? No they don't, it is the way they were born. So why is it when it comes to homosexuals, it is a choice?

Some parents after finding out their child is gay/lesbian will either disown them or keep it a secret. This is your flesh and blood you brought into this world, another choice the child did not have. Homosexuality is being more accepted in the world but not enough. When young children know they are gay/lesbian they go through many thoughts on how to deal with this situation. Not having support from family and friends will only make this harder for them to deal with. This is why many commit suicide, proving that homosexuality isn't a choice.

There are many children in the world today who are gay/lesbian but live in denial due to the hatred that others have for homosexuals. Most people who are against homosexuality need to realize this is not hurting them or their relationship. We do not affect your life by being homosexual.

If you are a parent with a homosexual child, help them deal with their feelings. Throwing your child out because they are gay/lesbian, I believe is a sin. Many people say homosexuality is a sin; well hatred is a sin as well. If you are a parent and you do not know how to deal with your child and their sexuality, seek help from a counselor. Most will tell you homosexuality is not a choice. They will be able to help you better understand this issue. They will also teach you how to help your child cope through this time in his or her life. No child should be alone during this change in their life. Whether they are a teenager or a young adult.

To many children commit suicide or withdraw due to their sexuality. They also go into a deep depression; this is no way for a child to live. If more parents would teach their children how to respect others and their differences, it would be easier for others to come out about their sexuality. There would also be a lot less children committing suicide.
