Talk to children: Talking to children about food allergies are essential to avoid complications. It is especially important if the child is young. It is quite common among children to share food or even to be offered food by other parents. Hence it is important to talk to children often about foods that need to be avoided. For smaller children, the caretaker needs to be well informed. Older kids can be taught about reading food labels and to ask for ingredients in the food when the food label is not available.
Inform the school authorities: When the child is especially small, it is best to inform the school authorities and care takers. Admission forms for kindergartens, play groups and day care centers have a special column to be filled by parents. Do fill the columns and write special notes for school authorities if required. It is also a good idea to have a talk with school nurse about the medications the child may require in case of any allergies.
Ask for ingredients while eating out: Utmost care must be taken while taking the child to eat out. Ask for ingredients in every food in restaurant, bakeries and fast food chains. Also check with the restaurant how the food is prepared. Even using the same knife to cut cheese and meat can cause problems in children severely allergic to milk. If the child is allergic to peanuts, enquire if any of the ordered food has peanuts or traces of nuts. As the child gets older, teach the child how to enquire about the ingredients while eating food.
Warn the children about sharing food: While sharing food is a common thing among kids, teach your child to avoid it when they are small. Even sharing home cooked foods among friends can cause dangers. Ask the child to avoid sharing to avoid any sort of allergies while being away from home.
Encourage children to talk about their food allergy: Provide as much information you can provide to your child about the allergic condition. Then encourage them to talk to friends and others about their medical condition and why they would avoid certain foods. Even candies may contain common allergic products as nuts and milk and hence children must be encouraged
to tell why they would avoid candies when it is offered by friends during birthdays and other occasions.
Swap unsafe food items: Always buy food items are safe and wrap them as treats. When the child is attending a birthday party were treats are common, try for surprise swaps of the treats.
