How Parents Can Teach Their Children Consideration

Simple Ways Children Can Learn to Be Considerate

Stephanie Espiritu
Being a parent doesn't come with a "how-to" book nor do we have all the answers to life's many questions. The good news is regardless of our age, social background, or upbringing, we are capable of instilling good values into our children, and if we haven't started already, we can today.

One of the easiest personality traits that we can teach our children is consideration. Yes the word may be confusing and difficult to understand to a child, but they will learn how to be considerate by performing very simple tasks.

Here is an overview of simple ways that parents can teach their children to be considerate.

Thank you notes-In today's world it's safe to say that the phrase "thank you" isn't said very often, however this should not be the case. Parents can teach their children to not only express their thankfulness through spoken words, but they should also teach their children to hand-write thank you notes. Whether it's the receipt of a birthday present or some random act of kindness, when children write thank you notes it not only shows their appreciation it also teaches them how to be considerate.

Manners-As children we were taught manners or at least we should have been. Today's generation is no exception and should be taught at a very early age. Teaching children to say please and thank you, as well as teaching them to ask for something instead of demanding it, will lay a positive foundation that can be built upon in the future. Not only will children learn to be considerate by using good manners they will also learn how to behave properly.

Sharing-Sharing one's things ties in with manners however it isn't always taught to every child. Whether they are a single child or one of many, every one of them should learn to share their items. In doing so they will not only learn how to be considerate they will also learn how to positively interact with their peers.

Create Cards-For stay at home moms, making crafts is an important part of their daily activities, so it only makes sense to teach children how to create greeting cards instead of purchasing them. Whether it's a birthday, anniversary, or get well card children will not only learn consideration by doing this activity, they will also be creating memories that will be cherished forever.

Clean Up-As a parent there is nothing worse than spending more than 8 hours at the office and then coming home to a messy house. Teaching children to pick-up after themselves not only teaches them to be considerate it also teaches them how to be responsible.

As parents we are obligated to raise our children to be positive and productive members of society and teaching them to be considerate is an important part of the process.

While teaching their children to be considerate, parents will ultimately see that consideration breeds many positive attributes including self-respect, respect for others, responsibility, and independence. These traits are truly admirable and will mold and shape our young ones into the adults that we have always wanted them to be.
