How to Pass an Interview with Flying Colors

Rosedust82
I have been a trainer and a recruiter/interviewer for the past four years and have met a lot of people during this time. One thing that I have noticed is that a lot of applicants, especially fresh graduates, do not know how to prepare for an interview. So I have decided to compile a few helpful tips that would help people pass their dream job interview.

NIGHT BEFORE THE INTERVIEW

A lot of people make the mistake of not preparing for an interview because according to most of the people I've asked, they said that "it wouldn't help." I believe this is wrong. There has to be a certain amount of preparation both physically and emotionally in order for the interview to be a success. Here are some things to do and remember:

1. Prepare the clothes that you have to wear for the interview. Depending on the type of job that you are applying for, you should choose either semi-casual (if the company is the type that is "laid back") or business attire. Some of you might be wondering what is the right thing to wear if it's a business attire. For ladies, long sleeves with a coat or blazer is highly recommended. Choose colors that would suit you. A skirt or a pair of slacks would also look good but one has to remember to avoid wearing tight clothes. Shoes should be closed and stockings if you're wearing a skirt is the way to go. Jewelry should be minimal and perfume should be subtle. Make-up is also recommended but put enough to not make you pale. For guys, long-sleeved shirts, coat or blazer is recommended. A tie that would compliment the long sleeves would be recommended and closed shoes as well. Remember that you are making a first impression. You are giving the interviewer an initial glimpse of how you are as a person.

2. Practice in front of a mirror. Ask yourself questions that you think the interviewer may ask and try to answer them in front of a mirror so you can see your facial reaction and body gestures. You might be wondering what questions may be asked, the most common questions would be something about yourself, the things on resume, your previous work (if there is), your knowledge about the company and/or the job that you applied for and the reasons why the company should hire you. Those are the basic questions that may be asked.

3. Get enough rest. You have a long day ahead.

BEFORE THE INTERVIEW

1. Make sure that you are on time. It doesn't matter if you're early. Just make sure that you are not late.

2. Check that your make-up/ clothes are set and ready. Pop a mint candy to make sure that your breath remains fresh.

3. Take a deep breath and relax.

DURING THE INTERVIEW

1. Do not cross your legs, slouch or fidget. It drives interviewers crazy! and remember again. First Impression. You need to look professional. Look confident and relaxed even if you're nervous. Smile. Nothing is better than interviewers seeing you relaxed and smiling. DO NOT PANIC if you're asked a question that is not expected. You can always say that it's a tough question and proceed to answer it.

2. When you are asked a question, look at the interviewer in the eye (but don't stare down at them!). Maintaining eye contact gives the interviewer the impression that you know what you're saying. You can use some hand gestures to emphasize a point. If you don't know what to say or you need a little time to think. You can use transitional phrases like "that's a good question", "Hmmm" or something to that effect. Please minimize or remove filler words such as "uhmm" and "ahhh" because it gives the impression that you don't know what you're saying. Please try to be upbeat and enthusiastic especially if the question is about you or about the job. Personally, as an interviewer, I look for people who are upbeat and confident and can answer my questions quickly and precisely. They give me the impression that I really should hire them.

3. Don't forget to give a good firm handshake and thank the interviewer for the time.

With these tips, I'm pretty sure you'll be able to get that dream job that you've been waiting for. Remember that if you really want a good job, it pays to prepare beforehand.
