Password is the first step in protecting your identity everywhere. A strong password alone will not protect you from the attacks of identity thieves but it will certainly protect you from the amateur thieves!
Keep aside the following 'normal' habits while creating a password -

1. Many sites offer automatically generated password when you fill in their forms. Never accept that password. Generally these set passwords will be offered for everyone who registers with the site. It is very easy for the thieves to guess these passwords while attacking your details.

2. You should not use birth dates, names of your family members or similar information while setting a password. Some people feel that that date of birth of family members may create a secured password. However thieves may already know details like these about you. Identity theft may strike you from people around you!

3. Never use sequential letters or numbers as your password. You should always avoid passwords like 12345. They are very easy to guess.

4. Avoid using your ATM codes as passwords for other purposes. If someone hacks your computer at work, he may find an easy access to your bank account.

How to create an ideal password?

1. Instead of using any name or a date, try using a sequence of sentence which is easy to remember. So you can create a unique password in a sentence - my mother turns 60 this year.

2. You can use the symbol in place of letters in order to make the password stronger. For example you can use + sign for the letter t.

3. You should write your passwords on a paper and keep that paper in a safe place. Instead of using online password manager, this option is handy as well as convenient. If you do not write it down or save it in any other way, you will never get it when you want and all your efforts for its protection go waste.

4. Sometimes you can use the symbols like _ in the middle of your password in order to make it stronger.

Some websites tell you immediately what is the strength of your password. This is done by of many banks and financial institutions. This hint will be provided when you register with the website for the first time. If you receive such indication, revise your password to make it stronger.
Passwords are like locks to your front door. If you use cheap locks, the security of your house is at risk. You should not compromise in selecting the door lock. In the same way you should not use the passwords which may give easy access to thieves.

Even after using strong password, don't be under the impression that you have secured your financial details fully. This is only one aspect of the entire security system. Strong passwords increase the overall security of your identity and your finances.
