How to Get Past Writers Block

Courtney M. Johnosn
All writers go through it, it's our form of procrastination: writers block. To be blunt: it sucks. Especially when you are trying to get an article or a paper done and you're on deadline. Here's some tips on how to get rid of it quickly and get back to your writing

1) The first step is admitting you have it.
-Similar to many other problems people have, writers block is one of those things that writers don't like to admit to having. If you ever hope to get past the "staring blankly at your computer screen" stage, you must admit that you're suffering from writers block.

2) Think about what you want to do.
-What did you sit down to write about? Why are you writing it? Do you have a choice in writing it? Why should you or anyone else care about what your writing? These are some great questions to ask yourself when faced with writers block. These questions can spark inspiration and most importantly help formulate a lead (journalistic term for the beginning of an article). A good lead can always lead to a good article.

3) How will you follow up?
-Okay, now what's next? You've got your lead, you're a lot farther along then you were ten minutes ago and you aren't on the verge of a mental breakdown. Now its time to decide what direction you want to take whatever you are writing about. What are you trying to get across to the reader, what are you trying to focus on or prove and how does your lead help you to convey this point in the rest of the article/paper.

4) Review.
-Look over what you have so far. Does what you have written fulfill the goal you had for your writing? Does it sound the way you want it too? And most importantly is there anything else you can add to this piece to make it more interesting for your reader?

The key to getting over writers block is thinking straight, not procrastinating, and staying on topic.
If all else fails, take a break. Most likely this will help you discover new ideas and inspirations for your writing.
