How to Get Your Patio and Furnishings Ready for the Winter Months

When winter comes, so does bad weather. This is the cold, the snow, the sleet and the ice. Depending on where you live, you might experience a mild winter or a harsher one. Nonetheless, it's still a great idea to prepare your patio and furnishings for the winter months to keep things nice and make them last longer.

Start off with any gardening plants that you might have in containers. Many people have potted plants or herb gardens on their patio. These should be covered or taken inside where they will be away from the harsher conditions. One frost at a bad time can ruin these plants. Having them indoors controls the temperature and climate a bit better for them. For those plants that you want to grow during the winter, you will need plastic or coverings to help them produce like you want them to.

Wipe down everything on your patio. Anything that has been left outside is going to need to be cleaned up. Before storing everything away, it's good to wipe it down so there won't be any mold or mildew problems later on that can ruin the furnishings.

It's a good idea to bring your furnishings inside your home, garage or shed. Move these to get them out of the elements if you aren't going to be using them during the winter months.

Moved furnishings or not, buy covers for everything. The covers can help keep out pest problems and protect the finish on everything. This is especially important for items left out all winter long. If you can't find a cover, tarps work too.

Clean up all the fall leaves, sticks, and debris that you might have. If you leave these too long, they decompose and can change the coloring of your patio finish if not careful.
