How to Make Your Patio More Environmentally Friendly

Lance Esondi
There are many people who are looking for ways of making certain parts of their homes more green. While you might not think about the patio area too much, many common practices aren't very environmentally friendly. If you want to make more positive choices, there are a few things that you can consider changing or avoid doing.

When you buy furnishings for your patio, you need to think about longevity over everything else. Many patio furnishings aren't made to last more than a few seasons. If you buy once and take care of everything, it's a much better choice since little is wasted. Find furnishings that you can cover changing the look so that you can have variety but still use again and again.

Avoid certain types of patio heaters. Many of these are very inefficient using quite a bit of energy for very little result. The only types of patio heating that you should consider using are the ones that also light the patio and heat it through radiant light. If you already own something like this, use it on occasion. If you don't, skip this and bundle up saving energy.

Get solar powered patio lighting. These are very cheap and will work for you capturing energy all day long through the sun and storing this power in the batteries to light up the patio at night. What is nice is that you won't have to deal with cords and you can have lights almost anywhere.

Add some production value to your patio. Many people will make small container gardens out on the patio. One of the best plants to consider growing is an herb garden. This is a place you can save money and have fresh herbs. It's more efficient and saves energy to get herbs through this process than going to the store.
