Definition of a Scholarship

A scholarship is a grant of monetary assistance to those eligible to apply for the purpose of furnishing tuition, books, and cost of living while in school.

These funds are given to help the donor successfully accomplish a set initiative in the community locally or nationally. These funds are not a loan. Therefore the funds will not be required to be paid back.

Requirements of a Scholarship

Scholarship's, as monetary assistance, will not be paid back like a loan. But they obligate the recipient of the scholarship to uphold certain demands such as:

  • Grade point average-this the most common requirement for scholarships.
  • Maintain certain number of credit hours each semester or year.
  • Be enrolled in a specific program of study or research.
  • Some are combined with a work-study program.
  • Other requirements based on type of category the scholarship falls into.

It could be one of these or a combination of requirements. Read your scholarship. It will spell out everything you need to know, but make sure you can do what it requires.

Be honest with yourself. A scholarship is a valid and legal contract that obligates you to its terms and requirements in exchange for money.

Categories of Scholarships

There are generally thought to be three categories of scholarships:

  • Needs-based scholarships are based predominately on income available to the student to pay for his college education.
  • Merit-based scholarships are based on academic achievements or extra curricular activities such as music, sports, clubs, etc.
  • Association-based scholarships are dependant upon as many different organizations as you can think of such as religious organizations, fraternal organizations, corporations and many more.

Its important to understand what type of scholarships there are when you begin your research. If you are aware of the different types you will save time in securing your funding for your college education.

Now that you know what a scholarship is and what types there are you need to take an inventory of values and qualities you possess. Things such as nationality, where your parents work, religious affiliation, and more to correctly locate scholarships that are right for you.

Do not let anyone tell you it is easy to get a college scholarship. Some consultants will say there is money going unclaimed to persuade you that this type of funding is practically guaranteed. That's wrong, Make no mistake that it is hard work to obtain scholarships.
