How to Use PC Restore on Dell Computers

Unlike with many computers, Dell computers provide users with a quick and easy way to restore their systems to factory settings. Resetting your Dell computer to factory settings can erase problems due to a virus. If you're having problems with your Dell computer, it may be time to run to a PC Restore.

What to Expect

When you use the PC Restore feature on Dell computers, all data will be erased from your computer, including files and programs. Unlike formatting and reinstalling your operating system, the PC Restore program can restore your Dell to its original factory image within eight to ten minutes.

Preparation

Before running PC Restore, backup all files and folders you want to keep. Use an external hard drive, flash drive, CD or DVD to store files on. If you have backup software, use the software to create a backup image for the files and folders you select. Once the PC Restore process is complete, you can restore your files and folders using the backup.

Make a list of all programs you need to reinstall. Any programs not installed originally by Dell must be reinstalled after the PC Restore process. Note that some backup software programs allow you to backup programs as well as files. You will need the installation media for all programs you want to reinstall.

PC Restore

Restart your Dell computer. During the boot process, press and hold both the "Ctrl" and "F11" keys. Release both keys at once. Any Dell computers without an F11 key, such as the Dell Inspiron Mini 9, do not have the PC Restore option.

Press "Restore" when the Dell PC Restore by Symantec window opens. Press "Confirm" when the warning message appears about erasing all data. Do not press any buttons or restart your computer until the message "The system recovery process was successful" appears. Press "Finish" to restart your computer and complete the PC Restore process.

Programs, Files and Drivers

Install all necessary programs one by one. Do not try to run multiple installations at once. If you are asked to restart your computer, wait until you've finished installing all programs before restarting. This will greatly decrease you installation time.

After installing programs, connect to the Internet and download all Windows updates. Visit Microsoft's Update site for updates on both your operating system and Microsoft products. If you just want to update your operating system, visit Windows Update.

Update your anti-virus program immediately after installing Windows updates. The update process varies based upon your anti-virus program. This will help keep your computer as secure as possible.

As stated above, restore all files from the backup you made before running PC Restore. The final thing you need to reinstall is drivers. If you have issues with hardware not originally installed by Dell, use the disks supplied with your hardware or visit your hardware manufacturer's website for driver downloads.
