How to Make the Perfect Writing Area

Scott Ranzau
As most writers know, finding a place to write where you feel inspired and relaxed can be difficult. Your brain plays a key part in finding a harmonious area in which to exercise your inspirational stories. The right brain focuses more on keeping your senses occupied while the left side focuses on your creativity. When you set up your writing area, you want to keep this in mind. Less clutter in your writing area will help your left-brain or creative side focus more and keep your right brain from feeling as cluttered as your writing area.

Determine the area you have had the most success when writing. Some people find that silence suits them well and would be best served writing in a library type setting. Others find that they need some background noise going on around them and may play music that relates to what they are writing about in order to inspire their creativity. These types of people may find that writing in a bookstore or coffee shop would suit them better. Make sure, though, that the background noise does not become a distraction as you are trying to eliminate distractions.

Once you have determined the amount of auditory stimulation you want or need you next have to focus on the visual stimulation in your writing area. The color scheme of your area can determine your creativity. The color scheme can change, though, depending on your mood and what you want to write about. Make sure that your color schemes can be considered temporary so you can change them with your moods and ideas. You can hang colorful curtains, place colorful items on the desk in front of you or simply have color mood lighting. The possibilities are only limited to your imagination.

Now that you have determined the amount of auditory and visual stimulation, you next have to concentrate on the tactile stimulation of your writing area. Think about what you want your body to feel as you write your inspirational story. Do you prefer paper and pen or writing on a computer? Do you prefer a thick cushy leather chair or a straight back wood one? If you want lots of tactile stimulation, try writing with pen and paper in a big stuffed chair. If you want your mind to be more stimulated, try using a computer to jot down your ideas. Use any combination of tactile stimulation in your writing area that suits you best in your creativity.

The scent in the air can affect the creative juices also. You might want to dress up your writing area with scented candles if you prefer scents or make sure your writing area has fresh clean air if you think scents will distract you. Whatever strikes your fancy. Sometimes writers feel like they need to eat when writing. If this describes you, be careful about how much you eat and what you are eating. Candy and caffeine make you hyper and makes it difficult to think or concentrate, try, instead, eating fruits and vegetables or drinking tea.

Try different ideas in your writing area to determine what works best for you. These ideas might even help with writers block because once you have the right setting in your writing area, ideas will come more quickly. Try some or all of these ideas in your writing area and see what creative ideas spring forth from your fingertips.

Good advice - my writing area isn't the best - but lately I've been able to write anywhere. A new laptop gifted to me for my birthday certainly helped!

Good tips! I need to do this!! I don't have a dedicated space, I basically sit on my bed, and it hurts!! So easy to get busy with life and not write when it's not comfortable and convenient!
