How to Have a Perfectly Unhealthy Turkey Day!

Julie Boehlke
With so many stories and tips out there about eating healthy and maintaining your weight this Holiday season, I thought about throwing in what's really dancing around in most people heads this Thanksgiving. The good non low fat traditional Thanksgiving food that we all love.

Let start off with a few drinks. Most people drink sodas, beer and wine on the holidays, but those who really want to unwind and please their pallets will choose something a bit more sinful. Crack out the Margarita Mix and salt brimmed glasses and start serving! Trust me, Grandma will say at no at first but will soon give in to the temptation. Plus it is free entertainment when everyone gets half lit!

My personal preference is Captain Morgan's Original Spiced Rum and caffeine free diet Pepsi. Ok so maybe on a holiday I will splurge and have regular Pepsi, lets go all out here. A final tip for serving mixed drinks; don't skimp on the alcohol- make it a double shot. Be sure to keep a secret stash in case if others are going back for thirds and fourths, it is the holidays after all and we don't need everyone crashing and burning too early in the evening. Remember too that you the host needs to keep well stocked on Captain Morgan in case of personal emergencies, like the after dinner politic showdown between Grandma and cousin Steve. Trust me the only way to sit through it is to have another stiff drink.

Now on with the appetizers, every Thanksgiving we usually have them or wish we could. These goodies end up on that little coffee table in the living room where all the guys gather around to drink beer, eat their munchies and watch the Detroit Lions lose. Its ok for most people to be couch potatoes today as long as they are not supposed to be out cooking in the kitchen.

So what are the most sinfully good munchies for Turkey day? Taco Dip is always a winner. You know the sour cream, the hamburger, all the cheese and toppings that make it delightful. Don't forget to dip with the Tostitos or Frito's scoops. No baked tortilla chips with no salt here. Aunt Donna always makes the Pâté dip and crackers. Have to have some of that, of course its straight up cholesterol clogging food material, but you only dig into it once a year so by all means go ahead. Ok, now what about the Lil Smokies and barbecue sauce? We all associate them with being a holiday classic too. don't forget to serve those too. What about the hot Crab Dip made with beer and three cheeses, my personal recipe and favorite, but not for the health conscious. Loaded with butter, crab, cheese and of course beer this delight can be served with Tortilla chips or crackers, not the low fat ones please, it ruins it. Also I prefer to use Corona in this not the cheap canned beer. If you are serving it, serve it right, trust me everyone will be smiling.

Ok now its time for dinner and more than most likely the gals have been slaving away all day in the kitchen to make things just right and the guys expect dinner to be served promptly. But in some cases something the guys like to do is to deep fry the bird, take heed because special caution needs to be taken when attemting this task. Deep frying your Turkey is the ultimate way to go for the best flavor and the moist tender meat. Pure peanut oil is best, it is high in fat but it will crisp the bird to perfection!

If you decide to stick the bird in the oven, rub lightly with oil to make the skin crispy and to trap moisture. Make sure to prepare lots of stuffing. Home made is best with lots of seasoned bread and sage.

For the gravy, do not used canned, people can tell the difference and it isn't good compared to homemade. Use the drippings and add extra butter and cream to make a decadent traditional Turkey Gravy, your guests will love you for this one.

You must have the jelled cranberries on the table. Chances are good not everyone will eat them but they still have to be on the table, it's a tradition.

Green Bean Casserole, with lots of cream mushroom soup is always a good choice. Sweet Potato Casserole with lots of butter, pecans and marshmallows is also a sinful classic.

Please don't skimp on the Dinner Rolls! Don't buy low fat rolls and bread that tastes like it was made from flax seeds. Buy only name brands or make your own.
Don't have margarine on the table for guests, use real salted butter.

Now its time to move on to desert. Of course an assortment of delicious pies is a must! Don't buy the cheap freezer thaw brands, buy from a deli or make yourself as long as you are sure they will come out looking and tasting good. There is nothing worse than getting ready for desert and Aunt Donna is showing off her Pumpkin pie that's gooey in the middle and the crusts are burned and charred.

These are just a few suggestions for an unhealthy but Happy Turkey Day, Eat Drink and be very Merry, tomorrow you can start your low carb diet!

You've got the right idea, Julz! My sisters and I hit every bakery and chocolate store in the town we visited for Thanksgiving - and ate our turkey (and ham and prime rib) dinner at a sinfully delicious buffet. We think we shopped it off on Black Friday - but hey, who cares? We loved every minute of it!
