How to Personalize a Calendar in Microsoft Office Publisher 2007

A Tutorial to Create a Calendar from a Template

Wendy Brock
When you want your own personalized calendar, Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 has many templates to get you started. This tutorial will lead you step-by-step in creating your own one-of-a-kind calendar.

When you open the program, the left-hand sidebar shows "Publication Types." Click on "calendars." You will be given the option of using templates in various sizes: full page, wallet, and blank.

If you want a calendar with large blocks to write in, use the "Understated" template. If you just want to know the date, but you're looking for something decorative, use the "Photo Album" template.

Getting Started

You can customize any template to your own needs, so click on the "Accent Box" template to learn how. This calendar is for organizations and businesses, but you're going to learn how to change all of it.

Deleting Unnecessary Boxes

On the right-hand side of the calendar, there are several text boxes for your business name, address, and contact information. Move your mouse arrow over the top dashed box. The arrow will change into a cross with arrows on the ends.

When your mouse arrow changes left click your mouse one time. The box is now highlighted with small circles around it. Press the delete button on your keyboard. Continue to delete the small information boxes on the right hand side. Be sure to delete the boxes at the bottom that read "Your business tag line here" and "Organization."

Resizing the Calendars

Now all you have left is the calendar. Move your mouse arrow over the bottom right-hand corner of the calendar and left click. The calendar is highlighted and the arrow changed. It should look like a diagonal line with arrows on each end. This icon shows that you can resize the calendar by making it either larger or smaller.

Left click and hold down the mouse button and now the arrow is a cross. As you hold down the left mouse button, move the mouse diagonally down to the right. Once the calendar is as large as you want it, release the mouse button and the calendar will expand to fill the page.

Resizing the Textboxes

Now use the same technique to resize the thick black box at the top of the page. This box frames the name of the month. Resize this box to match the width of the calendar.

Once you left click on the box, move your mouse arrow over the small circle on the right side of the box, not in the corners. The mouse arrow will change to a horizontal line with arrows on each end.

Hold the left mouse button down and drag the mouse to the right of the page. Line up the dashed box with the calendar. Once you're satisfied, release the mouse button and the box will automatically resize.

Resize the textbox by left clicking, holding down the button, and dragging the mouse to the right. When you release the mouse button, the name of the month should be centered.

Deleting the Accent Box

On the left side, you can see a blue square box. Left click it. Press the delete button on your keyboard. Now you have a plain black and white calendar.

Changing Font, Text Color and Text Sizes

Highlight the name of the month, the day of the week or the numbers of the days. A taskbar will appear above the rules grid. Change the font, size or text and text color with options in this taskbar.

Now you have a customized calendar for displaying on your wall or at your desk. Use the calendars to teach your child to read a calendar. Punch three holes along the side and place it in a 3-ring binder to remind you of school tests. However you use it, you're going to love have your very own personalized calendar.
