1. Think of a special event in your life. Has anything occurred in your life that has made a significant impact on you? Think about the moments of your life where you have felt the best and see if you can come up with any names for your children. For instance, a friend of mine was proposed to near a river and because of this they named their little boy River. Choosing a baby name can be as simple as that. Just think of your life and its experiences.
2. Think of any special happenings during your pregnancy. You are most likely pregnant right now as you are reading this article. Think about your pregnancy and how it has been going thus far. Think about the places you've been and the people that you have met so far etc... Pregnancy can cause women to perceive ordinary life differently because they feel differently.
3. Think of a special relative. It is not uncommon for people to name their children after close loved ones or friends (alive or deceased.) If there is someone very dear to you in your life think of using their name as an inspiration for the name of your children.
5. Try to envision what your child will be like when he/she is older. Do you envision your baby boy as strong or your baby girl as delicate? Think about how your children will be as they grow up and write these adjectives down in a journal. After you have jotted a few adjectives down, do some research to find names that translate to these adjectives. You can use text books and internet sources for this one.
6. Think of any art (film, painting, literature, music) that has touched you deeply. Some people name their children after characters in films and books that have intrigued them. Singer Mariah Carey was named after the song, "They Call the Wind Mariah," from the Paint Your Wagon musical.
7. Think of a special place you would like to visit or have visited. Think of all the places that you would like to visit in your lifetime or think about the places that you have already visited. Are there any places that fascinate you? For instance, in South American rainforests there are woody plants called Liana that grow there, Liana could make a great name for a little girl. I have met at least three children with the name Rio, one with the name Dakota and two with the name Brooklyn. Think about plants, streets, restaurants, scenery, anything that comes to your mind when you think about places that you would like to visit.
8. Think of your ancestry and heritage. This is the easiest way to name a child. If you are Irish you may want to consider naming your children a traditional Irish name. If you are of African descent maybe consider choosing African names for your children. You may already be familiar with names that are significant to your heritage if not you can seek out an elder in your family to help you out. If you can not find any help within your family there are always online and text book sources for you to reference.
