Avoid using the free companies.
There are several web hosting companies that offer free bandwidth. The catch is that the features you can use on your website may be limited, or you may have to have a banner ad on all of your webpages. This is probably going to be an issue for you if you want to be taken seriously as a company. Of course, if you just want to have a website for fun then you can use the free web hosting companies. But other then that, you should avoid them.
Reliability.
You don't want your website to ever be down, so make sure that your web host doesn't have this problem. Many web hosts will claim that they hardly ever have any down time. However, ask around and make sure that this is true. While it is acceptable for a web host to be down every so often for scheduled maintenance, make sure that this "scheduled maintenance" doesn't occur too often. Do some basic research online at places such as Epinions, FindMyHost, or CNET. Or seek advice from your friends and family. Perhaps, they too have their own websites and can recommend a good web host.
Price.
Some web hosting companies will be more expensive than others. However, this doesn't mean that they are necessarily better than the competition. Again, you'll need to do some research. The more expensive web host might have high prices due to financial difficulties. And if they're having problems with their money supply then they are more likely to have trouble keeping your website online twenty four hours a day.
The same could be said for a cheaper web host. In desperation for new clients, a less expensive web host might lure you with their prices. But then the cheap web hosting company might go bankrupt somewhere down the road, which will cause all sorts of problems for you to deal with. So be careful.
Support.
Does the web hosting company you want to use have contact information displayed on their website? The company should have a phone number to call, email, and a normal address. And test out their contact information to see if it's fully functional. If it doesn't work then avoid using the company. There are plenty of web hosts to choose from, after all.
Functionality.
Make sure that the web host you pick can handle the type of coding that you are planning to use for your website. So if you plan on using PHP coding, check and see if it's available. The website that the web host uses should contain this information somewhere on it. If they don't have the information listed then contact them. And if that doesn't work then use someone else.
As you can see, picking a good web host can easily decide whether or not your website is successful online. If you pick the wrong company, you could end up in a world of hurt. So take your time and research your next web host thoroughly. You will not regret it.

Post a CommentGreat article.
I had a web hosting company go bankrupt on me once. It was a not a pretty picture. I almost lost my domain name! Crikey!
I'm a consultant, and I've shopped around for web hosting companies for my clients for years, depending on their needs. The best advice I could give to anyone reading this is to go with the company that has the best support.
I usually follow the reviews over at http://thebestwebhostingreview.com, but there are other sites out there that offer good info. Do a search on the web if you are in doubt.
Cheers.
