How to Pick a Killer Halloween Party Theme

Julie Boehlke
Its almost that time of year for the ghosts and ghouls to come out of the woodwork. So why not plan ahead to get ready for the season? I've come up with a few bone chilling ideas so that you too can throw a howling get together with friends and family.

Most people choose a theme based on their favorite Halloween characters or the traditional witches and serial killers. By choosing a theme and going from there, that is a good base to get started on pulling your party together. A haunted house theme with all your favorite characters is a great idea, and with a little work ahead of time, you can be scaring the pants off of all of your guests in no time. By setting things up in your garage or barn you can create a scary entrance for them to walk into that leads to the party gathering spot.

Of course darkness is what it's all about, use black lights when ever possible, and make sure to use florescent objects so they show up and pop out when people walk by. Stuffing some clothes with straw and adding masks or mannequin heads can create a very scary visual. Paints are essential to use for blood and to create scars on the faces of the ghouls. A mummy would be very easy to create by again stuffing clothes and then wrapping in white cloth or toilet paper. Having some volunteers participate for the initial welcoming of guests is a real good idea. They can pop out and say hi when the guests least expect it. Remember fright is the name of the game tonight.

Dry ice is an essential to add to your list of things to pick up for your party. You can locate a dry ice machine at most party rental stores. These are good to create a diversion from one area to another, for instance if you have a murder scene in one area of the room and then a creepy cannibal eating family at the dinner table on the other side, dry ice will break up the scenes.

Everyone is petrified of Jason from Friday the 13th and of course Halloween with Michael Myers. Try to find some tunes from each movie (everyone freaks when they hear that music) and play it and then have someone come out in front of guests with a mask on. Very scary!

Not just movie themes are a must have for Halloween parties but also creepy sounds CD's, like cats screeching, wolves howling and doors creaking. A woman's scream and the whistling wind sounds is also a good idea. You could create these noises yourself if you really wanted to be creative, but If you Google search Halloween sounds you may be able to find some MIDI files online for free. You can even pick up cheap creepy sound CD's at retail stores.

Another cool idea is to have an actual horror movie playing in the background, you could even base your theme around that. Such as A Nightmare on Elm Street,. If you cant have it showing on a TV that the guests can see, set it up so one room is playing the theme song, then the next is playing movie scenes with Freddy's creepy voice and then at the end maybe have Freddy be there waiting for guests near a bed, reminding them not to fall asleep tonight.

By using some creative techniques you are sure to keep your guests from falling asleep and up partying and having fun all night!
