How to Pick Out a Good Business Name

Henry Lamb
Got a new business? When starting your business, everything may depend on the first impression that you give out. This starts with the simple task of choosing your business name. This may seem to the most tedious and simplest task there is. But it's not as easy as you may think. A business name must exude everything that your line of business promises in its products.

Here are a few tips that you can ponder on when you are trying to pick out your business name:

Making it up plays it down

You may want to avoid making up the name off the top of your head. This is probably the worst thing you can do. While it is good to be creative, you can't go pulling out words from a dictionary, mashing them up together just to make a name up. Can you imagine your new printing press company with a name like, for example, Printing & Posting, Inc.? Avoid mashing up words together just so that you can get the job of naming a business out of the way. Be serious and your business will be taken seriously.

Stay away from the "Play of words" strategy

Alliteration is fun. But that's just as far as it goes. Words that use the same first letter do not sound like something seriously thought about. Stay away from names like Baby Breath Bikinis or Savory Sandwich Store. These names become old in a fairly short amount of time. Although these names will be remembered, it won't be for the right reasons because they do not present quality at any given level. Want to play with words? Play with the right ones that will help in your advertising strategies as well.

Generic names, generic impressions

Another thing to stay away from is the generic name. There are way too many businesses out there called ABC Store or the 123 Chain. This is not the avenue that you want to be walking through. These generic names may give out the impression that the product you are offering is equally generic. That means fewer sales because nobody wants to buy something generic. Class up your name so that your potential customers will think can say, "Now there's a name or product that I can tell everybody about."

The secret: Short & Simple

Your business name doesn't have to be too long. Can you imagine naming your bakery, "The Bakery That Bakes Bread Right Because We Can, Incorporated"? Save all the wordy expressions for your advertising campaigns. Keep your business name short and simple so that the recall will also be kept simple and easy. If your business name is easy to remember and I catchy at the same time, chances are that people will be recommending it to friends off of the top of their heads.

Keep these simple tips in mind if you are about to start your own business. Share these tips with friends as well. With a simple and catchy name to represent your business, sales are bound to skyrocket or at least keep things on a manageable level. Also remember to choose a name that will grow with your business so that if your business does skyrocket, its name still suits it fine.
