How to Pick Out a Great Gift for Almost Anyone

HeatherMara
I am one of the few people I know that actually likes to shop for gifts for other people. Most people dread the experience because they are afraid that they will not find something the gift recipient will want, and this will reflect poorly on the relationship. I have often helped friends, family, and even business associates figure out a great present for someone when they are clueless as to what to get.

Planning & Research

It is not really that hard to find a great gift if you do just a little bit of research and planning. The first thing you must determine is how much you want to spend and this should include the presentation and packaging of the gift. Many people make the mistake of thinking that the more money you spend, the better the gift will be. Often people are more moved by a gift that shows that you have really thought about them and what they like versus just charging another item to your credit card.

Next you need to do some research about the person, even if that means just contemplating what you know about the recipient. Do they have a favorite passion such as a sport team, singer, writer, actor, hobby, craft, food, drink, travel, art, or animal? Do they collect anything? Are they part of an organization such as a charity or theatre group? Do they like to play board games, computer games, or amateur sports? You can also find out if there is something specific they really need that they cannot afford or just have not had time to get. Do they need clothes, kitchen appliances, and other things for the home, yard, or car?

Some people do not seem to need or want anything, especially the elderly who normally either have an overabundance of items or limited space. Do they need help with specific chores or repairs? Could your recipient use help with a home improvement project or just an afternoon away from their kids? Sometimes just taking a person out to lunch or dinner and giving them a break can mean more than any physical gift. It is also fine to simply ask the person what they may like or need.

Choosing the Gift

After you have chosen several categories in which the person who you are getting a gift for may want or need, then you can decide whether to buy one large gift or a group of related gifts. For example a friend may have an old blender that does not work well, so you may want to get an expensive blender with all the gadgets or a cheaper blender with a couple of cute drinking glasses, some drink mixers, and a bottle of alcohol. If your person likes sports you could buy tickets to an event or find a few pieces of collectable memorabilia for their favorite team.

If you have decide that your recipient would like a non-physical gift then a gift certificate for a service provided by you or a professional could be an ideal present. Many people appreciate donations to a favorite charity or organization in their name. Many charities will even take care of sending a card or email letting the person know of your donation.

Packaging

Lastly a gift can be made very memorable by the packaging. Items can be put into a beautiful gift basket that is decorated with flowers and ribbons, or wrapped with homemade paper and bows. Handmade cards or cards with a few lines explaining why the person is special to you can become a keepsake for close friends and family. You can even design your own gift certificate and deliver it tied to a balloon.

Just remember the whole point of a gift is to remind the person that they are special to you and even in this busy life you are thinking about them.

Good information! There is always someone that is just hard to get something for - always the most important person too!
