When I was out shopping for 'black Friday' I was in line several minutes in my local K-, mart and noticed the ample women in front of me buying a very felt looking red pea coat in a larger size. I just kept thinking the poor women would look like felt tomato.
It brought back memories of my childhood when the local TV station ran ads that said' Bob Gregory says it is going to be very cold outside' and had a mother putting on snow pants and a ski jacket on a small kid. By the time she added the snow cap and scarf the child could not see and was walking like the abominable snowman. This brought to recent memory the pictures I saw of myself in a plus sized pair of ski pants and a ski jacket from a ski trip a couple of years back. I looked like a winter stuffed scarecrow with a large body and very tiny head. It was not attractive.
Buying a winter jacket when you are plus sized requires a little more work than it does for our less bulky counter parts. Yes, I believe you can find the right coat to walk through your winter wonderland. First you must determine what kind of winter coat you are buying is it for a ski trip or just everyday for work. Most of us need two winter coats one to take the kids ice skating in and shovel the driveway and one to wear over dresses and skirts for church or work.
The first rule for buying plus sized coats is try to find one that accents your body and does not hide it . A bulky coat draws attention to your body anyway so you are not fooling anyone. Any coat you have to walk funny in to maintain your balance is off the list. Going with longer length coats will make you look slimmer. You should look for coats in muted and darker colors as well. That bright yellow coat may remind you of sunnier days, but it may remind the neighbors of a fruit of the loom guy in a lemon or banana suit.
Winter coat trends this year feature Russian inspired designed. that runs the gamete from the classic camel wool coats to cocoon styles. Military tailored coats are in style and can complement the larger figure. I would avoid military colors because on older women olive green appears dowdy. Shoulder pads have returned from the eighties. This can compliment a small framed plus sized women or make a large boned women look like an Amazon.
Coats with ruffles are in. Again smaller framed women will be able to carry it off. Nothing replaces trying your coat on to see how it looks from all sides on your frame. Fur accented coats are in, but it is best for your wallet to stick with quality imitation fur accents, plus you will not smell like a wet dog when the fur trim gets wet. Coats that cinch in the middle will compliment most plus sized figures as they emphasize your waistline. Some varieties of ski jackets will do this as well if they have a midways buckle. Try avoiding matching your ski pants with your jacket. Go with dark ski pants and a medium shaded jacket so that only your skiing makes you stand out on the slopes.
