The selection of the right carpet color for your home can be challenge with the wide variety of carpet colors available today. In this article we are going to look at the different styles of carpet, and the effect that the style will have on the color. We will also look at some tips to help you select a carpet color that complements your home, and the furnishings within it. The style of carpet can have a big effect on the way the color is perceived when looking at the carpet. A solid color on a textured carpet is going to look quite different, often lighter, than on a regular conventional loop pile carpet. When selecting a carpet color keep in mind the type of the carpet and its effect on the color.

Carpet should be thought of as the basis for your homes décor and furnishings. Think of carpet as a broad canvas upon which you "paint" the rest of the rooms furnishings upon. If you are putting carpet into a room for which you already have furnishings, then it is very important to take those items into account when selecting the carpet color. Its important to avoid too big of a clash between your chosen carpet color, and the color of your furnishings.

Perhaps the most basic of all home carpet colors is beige. This neutral color helps to make a room look more spacious. This is why you will often see this color in apartment homes and condominiums. If the room you are going to carpet feels closed in, beige is a good choice.

Carpet which comes in shades of blue or green are often thought to be calming, and can help to tone down a room. Earth tones, like blues or dark greens can often be used to help make a huge room feel smaller and more intimate.

If the size of the room is not really an issue then you should try to select a color that goes along with your furniture. For example, it is probably not a good choice to pick a dark color if your furniture in the room is already a dark color. Often, too much of the same color can over power the room. Pick a lighter color to brighten up and balance the room out. Of course you will want to take a key from the tone of the color of the furniture and select a hue, which will complement that.

Keep in mind that when you are looking at carpet in the store, different lighting conditions will make the colors look different. The better carpet stores invest in special lighting which is neutral in tone, and will help you to see the "true" color of the carpet. If you look at carpet samples in Lowes or Home Depot, often the color of the light will make the carpet look a little different when you get it home. In all cases its best to bring some samples home with you, and put them in the room with your furniture and finishes to see what they would look like installed in your home.
