Decide whether you will have a band or a DJ. This will help you decide upon the type of song you will want for your slow songs at your wedding reception. A DJ will easily be able to play whatever choice you make, but a band will have more restrictions. You will also be able to talk to the band or DJ about the song choices that they would suggest for you based on your personality and the theme of the wedding.20To select a band or DJ, check out theknot.com's advice and listings. (see resources for link)
Check out your DJ or band's playlist and surf the possibilities on iTunes. Websites such as Top Wedding Songs or Wedding Vendors will provide you lists of the top slow dance song choices. (see Resources for link) Take a look at what other people have selected for their slow songs and what your friends and family recommend. Look through your personal CD collection or playlist for slow songs that you love to listen to.
For the slow songs with your parents, think about what songs were special to them or were played at their wedding. On the other hand, you can think about songs that describe special relationships between father-daughter, etc. Websites such as Top Wedding Songs can give you slow songs specific to father-daughters or mother-sons. (See Resources for link).
Pick a song that is special to you. Is there a song that reminds you of when you and your future spouse first started to date? Or perhaps one whose words describe the two of you and your relationship together? Think about what would represent you and your new spouse for your first dance.
Listen to the words. Many songs are beautiful and sound rom antic until you think about what the words are actually saying. As Marylandweddings.com points out, you will not want a "breakup" song as your first dance, nor will you want to shock the guests by inappropriate lyrics. Listen to the lyrics and find a song with words that truly speak to what you are feeling. Make sure the words are special and speak to your heart.
Focus on what will personalize your reception and speak to who you are as a couple. Do not feel like you need to use one of the stereotypical first dance songs if they do not represent who you are. If you do not agree with the advice you are being given by friends and family, do not hesitate to make your own choice based on what will truly be special to you and your future spouse.
