How I Picked a Name for My Baby

Betty Treptow
When I was pregnant with my third and last child everyone was sure that he would be a boy. When I was in my child-bearing years we didn't get ultra sounds done unless it was a real emergency. It was believed to be dangerous to the fetus at that time.

I had picked a name for a girl but couldn't decide on any boy names. I decided to wait until the baby was born to make my decision. My first son was named after his dad and my dad. The other children in the family nicknamed him "Jimbob". The Walton's was a very popular show at that time.

My daughter when she was born was named after "Laura" on Little House on the Prairie". When I became pregnant with my third child my mother-in-law wanted to name him. She didn't want anymore TV names in the family.

Her birthday was coming up about the time my son was due. I promised her that if the baby was born on her birthday I would name it after her but I would pick the name. Sure enough he was born on her birthday. I came up with his middle name, "Duncan" because it was her maiden name.

It made her happy and she felt very special having her namesake born on her birthday. The name was not given until the last minute but it has suited him well. I think that is when you can find the best name is to wait until the baby is born and see what happens.
