How to Make a Pink or Blue Satin Toddler Pillow

Your baby is your pride and joy. You want to give them the very best of everything. You also want to ensure their comfort. Parents want their children's bedding to be comfortable and to look fabulous. You also want it to be safe.

Babies over one year old can use pillows. Newborns and infants should not have pillows or stuffed animals in their cribs due to the threat of suffocation. Once your baby turns a year old it is safe to give them a pillow. However, a full size pillow can still be dangerous. Something that big and that fluffy can still suffocate your child. A toddlers first pillow needs to be toddler sized.

You can make your own toddler sized pillow. It's easy! Pink satin is perfect for little girls, and blue satin is great for little boys. Any fabric will do though, so long as it's soft. A rough fabric may irritate your baby's face. Satin will not. It is super smooth, soft, and silky.

To start making your pillow here's what to do. First gather your supplies. What you'll need is a good pair of scissors, needle and thread or a sewing machine, pillow stuffing, common pins, and pink or blue satin fabric. If you'd like an edging then you'll need that too. Lace is perfect for a little girls pillow, and satin ribbon in yellow, dark blue, orange, red or mint green works great for a little boys.

When you have all of your supplies ready lay them out on a flat workspace. If you don't have a craft room then a fold out table or the kitchen table works well. People with sewing machines of course would work at their machines. People who don't have machines can still make the pillow! There is nothing wrong with hand stitching.

The common toddler pillow is about eight inches wide and about sixteen inches long. Given this cut your satin fabric to be eight and a half inches wide and sixteen and a half inches long. This will allow the fabric to be folded over a quarter of an inch. This is important for durability, especially with delicate fabrics like satin. To measure your fabric use a hard edged ruler. Draw a line using a fabric marker using the edge of the ruler. Doing this will give you cut lines. Use a sharp pair of fabric sheers and cut the fabric to size. Take your time to avoid cutting mistakes.

Next cut another piece the exact same size. Your pillow needs two sides. Once both sides are cut put them together with the two front sides facing each other and the two backsides on the outside. When you are done sewing the two front sides will be on the outside because it will get turned inside out. This makes it so that the seams are on the inside.

The next step is to pin your edges. This is done to keep the fabric in place while you are sewing it. Common pins are used. To begin start at a corner. Going down one side first make sure that the edges of the fabric are even. Fold the fabric over one quarter of an inch. Inset a pin by pushing it down through the fabric and then back up through and then back down into the fabric. Down in, back up out and down in again. The pin will stay in place. Do this all the way down each side.

Once your sides are pinned and secure it's time to sew them. Stitch each side twice. Once you are done sewing your sides it's time to remove all of the pins. Once all of the pins are removed it's time to pin and stitch one end. Fold the fabric over one quarter of an inch and pin. Sew the one end all of the way across twice. Sewing the seams twice gives the seams more strength. Next remove the pins.

The only thing left open is the other end. You'll want to do this end the same but different. What's different is that the last three open inches stay open. Do pin but do not sew the last three inches because this is where you will insert the stuffing.

Once all but three inches of the last end is folded and pinned stitch it two time. After you've done this it's time to add the stuffing. First you'll need to turn the pillow right side out. Use the hole to do this. Stuff the stuffing into the hole until the pillow is full. When the pillow is full of stuffing you can finish sewing that end. However, the pillow will be right side out this time. Very carefully remove the pins while making sure the fabric stays folded under. Use very tiny stitches to close up the hole. The stitches may show a little because they're on the outside. That's okay because lace or other edging can be added to cover them.

Once the hole is closed it's time to add that lace or other edging. Sating ribbon works well. To use it fold it in half, turn under the sides toward the underside of it and place it once quarter of an inch over the seam of the pillow. Stitch it down the side first and when you come to a corner just keep going. Do this until it meets the corner where you began and stitch the two ends together. For lace simple attach it all the way around by stitching it on. There you have it! A pink or blue toddler sized satin pillow. Thanks for reading and take care!
