Hydrangeas are an unusual plant that changes the color of their flowers depending on the acidity of the soil. Neutral ph, like mine, can be changed to add color to the hydrangeas. Simply by pouring slightly acidic coffee to my plant, I added acid to the soil, turning the flowers into a soft pink color. When the soil is basic, the flowers will turn blue. I wonder if I added soapy water, which I believe to be basic, it would turn the flowers blue. I think I will try it next year.
You can also fertilize the soil by putting the extra coffee grinds into the soil as compost. It too is acidic and plants love slightly acidic soil. Adding kitchen waste like banana peels and old newspapers to the soil is good for the plants when it is applied as decomposed compost and can reduce the amount of garbage you put in landfills.
Just be sure not to put meat products in the compost as this will attract bear, raccoons and other pests. Most plants love some acid in their soil and hydrangeas are no exception. Other plants that like acid are azaleas and rhododendrons. Many people put these plants by the house's foundation, which is basic ph. And they don't do well there.
Another trick good when gardening is to aerate the soil a little by poking a knife into the dirt near the plants roots. I think it is good for them and will revitalize previously lack luster plants. I enjoy gardening a lot and have learned a lot from my family and I enjoy teaching others how to get better plants.
I hope these simple safe tricks inspire you to get out there and try them in your garden. They can really help make it more beautiful and you can even improve the quality of your soil. For example, save all the grass clippings and compost them instead of throwing them out. Shred your leaves and compost them as well. They can do wonders for your garden and make organic gardening possible. You will improve your soil and help reduce waste and possibly make your garden better.
