Traditionally, advent calendars have helped the young and young at heart count down the twenty-four days before Christmas. As far back as the 19th Century people have used a variety of methods for counting down the days such as candles, hanging pictures and chalk lines. The first advent calendar to come to print was in 1908 but this advent calendar did not have to windows to open. The opening of the advent calendar is a great way to bring the family together for at least a few minutes each day to celebrate in the twenty-four days prior to Christmas. There are a variety of ways to make a personalized digital advent calendar. You can either use digital pictures that you actually print out, or you can create a digital display of twenty-four unique pictures and use them in a power point presentation. The great thing behind a power point presentation digital advent calendar is you can share it will friends and family outside your home.

I suggest picking out twenty-four unique digital pictures that your family will be able to relate to for your personalized digital advent calendar. Perhaps use pictures from previous years Christmas or other holidays that show lessons related to the Christmas holiday. Keep in mind Christmas is a celebration of Jesus's birthday so you can use baby pictures as well. By using baby pictures you can remind everyone what Christmas is all about and why we look forward to the celebration. Choose pictures the children will be able to relate to so you can use the family time together to teach a lesson. If you have multiple children you can use a picture of all of them doing something or just smiling together. Use this as an example of love and family. There are many other ideas you can use depending on the types of pictures you choose. Think of a way to teach the children the story of the birth of Jesus. Take a digital picture of the stars and moon and teach the story of how the wise men followed the Star to Bethlehem and found the Baby Jesus wrapped in swaddling clothes and laying in a manger. Use this time to tell your children the reason we give gifts at Christmas is because everyone that came to see the Baby Jesus brought gifts for him and we give from our hearts in remembrance of this.

Once you have your pictures picked out, take twelve plain white envelopes and cut them in half. This will give you twenty-four half envelopes to place your digital pictures in. You can decorate the envelopes yourself or make it a family project and let the children decorate the envelopes. Give each envelope a number, add your digital pictures and tape or glue them on a piece of poster board. Each day when you and your family get together for the opening of an advent calendar picture, take the picture out that coincides with date. Tack the picture to the outside of the envelope and proudly display your digital advent calendar for family and friends to see!

Making a digital advent calendar will give you and your family a treasure that can be kept for years to come. It can also be the start of a fun Christmas project and tradition.
